Day 6: Your pelvic floor is an amazing muscle, but we need to treat it right before pregnancy, during and after.
Your pelvic floor muscles have to work harder than normal during pregnancy to support the weight of your growing baby and are also softened due to pregnancy hormones, which give them a disadvantage.
During a vagina birth, they undergo considerable stretching and strain. They should relax and stretch to thin out and allow for the birthing of your baby. A tense pelvic floor can slow down the birth of your baby, it can also make you more prone to tearing or prolapse.
What can you do?
You want your pelvic floor to be as strong and flexible as possible throughout your pregnancy to help with your birthing process and recover faster after birth.
Signs you might have a tight pelvic floor: constipation, pelvic pain, low back pain, pain with intercourse, peeing frequently
Signs you might have a weak pelvic floor:
Leaking urine, less control passing wind, failing to reach toilet in time, tampons that dislodge or slide down, having to wipe several times after a bowel movement, unable to completely stop flow of first morning pee.
Pelvic floor Physiotherapy can help get your pelvic floor ready for pregnancy & birth or help recover it after so you can feel like yourself again.
