Knee Pain

  • What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is caused when articular cartilage wears thin, causing pain.
The pain flares when with activity and gets better with rest.

  • Hallmarks of this problem are:

    Discomfort
    Stiffness
Osteoarthritis often occurs with age, dysfunctional joint, and overuse of that joint. Decreasing inflammation is critical in the successful treatment of this condition.

  • PFPS: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

PFPS is one of the most common disorders of the knee, accounting for 25% of all knee injuries seen in a sports medicine clinic.  Typically, pain is aggravated with functions that increase patellofemoral compressive forces, such as ascending and descending hills or stairs, squatting, and prolonged sitting with the knee in a flexed position.

The most common reasons for anterior knee pain in orthopaedic sports medicine, is overuse, patellofemoral malalignment and trauma.  No matter where the pain is due to direct trauma, overuse or malalignment (or a combination of factors), rest often reduces symptoms.

Tightness of the ITB can affect normal patella excursion.  Medial quadricept weakness is often seen, tight calf muscles can contribute, and changes to patellar (knee cap) alignment. Acupuncture, rehab, chiropractor and or physiotherapy can be very effective in the care and resolution of this pain.
